About this work
A sales executive finds customers, explains a product or service, and closes the deal. The work can be in shops, on field visits, in offices or online. Pay often depends on targets.
What the work looks like
- Find new customers through visits, calls, WhatsApp, referrals and online enquiries.
- Explain the product in simple words and answer the customer's questions.
- Send quotes and follow up until the customer says yes or no.
- Record every lead and every deal in a CRM or a spreadsheet.
- Work towards a monthly target and report progress to a manager.
Tools and skills
CRM software such as Zoho CRM, HubSpot, Salesforce or LeadSquared to track leads and deals; WhatsApp Business app for catalogues, quotes and follow-ups; Excel or Google Sheets for lead lists, targets and simple maths; LinkedIn Sales Navigator for finding business buyers; UPI links, invoices and basic billing tools such as Zoho Books or Tally; AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude to draft messages and call notes
How to get started in India
- Many retail, telecom, FMCG, insurance and real estate firms hire freshers after Class 12 or graduation. Always read what the company asks for in the job post.
- A graduation in any subject is the common ask for office and B2B roles. A BBA or MBA in marketing helps for bigger firms but is not the only way.
- Start in a shop, a showroom, a field role or an inside sales role. Many people move from these into B2B sales later.
- Short courses in CRM, Excel and spoken English can help, but check that the course is not asking for big fees or promising a job.
