Jobs by city, ranked by employment size

We ranked 61 Indian cities by the size of their working population, using public government figures, so that every city list on this site follows one order. Mumbai scores 100 and every other city is compared with it. A bigger score means a larger job market. It does not mean more openings on this site today.

The ten largest job markets

Ranks 11 to 30

Ranks 31 to 61

IT and business services hubs

Cities known for software, business process and corporate offices. The big six for IT hiring demand in 2025 were Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, Mumbai and Delhi NCR, according to a Quess Corp report.

Manufacturing hubs

Cities known for factories, engineering, textiles, auto parts and steel. This tag is our own reading of public information and is not a ranking.

Delhi NCR and other metro areas

The census counts Delhi, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Gurugram and Noida as separate cities. They work as one job market, and together they score 102 on this scale. Thane, Navi Mumbai and Pimpri-Chinchwad belong to the Mumbai and Pune metro areas, so they are not ranked on their own.

How we ranked

Score = Census 2011 population of the urban agglomeration (or the city, where there is no agglomeration) multiplied by the share of people aged 15 and over who work, scaled so that Mumbai is 100. The share comes from the Periodic Labour Force Survey 2025 of the Ministry of Statistics: the city figure where the June 2026 million-plus-cities report publishes one, otherwise the district figure, otherwise the average for million-plus cities (49.8%).
