UI and UX designer: skills, tools, growth and future in India
UI and UX designers decide how an app or website looks and how easy it is to use. They study users, draw screens and test them before developers build.
Also searched as: UX designer, UI designer, product designer, interaction designer, UX researcher. Checked 16 October 2026.
What the work looks like
- Talk to users and watch them use a product to find problems.
- Draw flows and wireframes (simple layouts) in Figma.
- Build clickable prototypes to test ideas quickly.
- Create and maintain design systems: shared colours, buttons and fonts.
- Work with developers so the final product matches the design.
- Check designs for accessibility, such as readable text and screen-reader support.
Tools and technical skills
- Figma and FigJam, including its AI features
- Prototyping in Figma or ProtoPie
- User research: interviews, surveys and usability tests, with tools such as Maze
- Design systems and reusable components
- Accessibility: WCAG guidelines
- Basic HTML and CSS, to talk with developers
- Google Analytics 4, Microsoft Clarity or Hotjar to see how users behave
Skills beyond technology
- Listening to users: designers who only guess build the wrong thing.
- Explaining design choices in business words: managers fund results, not pretty screens.
- Taking feedback without taking it personally.
- Working with developers and product managers: every design needs a trade-off.
- Judgement and taste: AI can make many options, and you choose the right one.
How to get started in India
- A B.Des or M.Des from a design school is one route. Entrance exams such as UCEED and CEED are common ways in.
- Any degree can work if your portfolio is strong: engineering, arts, architecture, psychology or BCA.
- Portfolio: 2 or 3 case studies showing the problem, your research, your screens and what changed. A redesign of a real app is a fine start, if you label it as a practice project.
- Learn Figma (it has a free plan), basic user research and accessibility.
- First job: design intern, junior UI designer or junior product designer at a startup, agency or IT firm. Competition for junior roles is high. Never pay anyone for a job offer. Apply directly to the company or on trusted job boards.
How growth looked, and looks now
Earlier, about 2010 to 2019
From about 2010 to 2019, many Indian designers worked on print, branding or simple websites. Smartphones and apps made 'UX' (user experience) a job in IT firms and startups. Tools moved from Photoshop to Sketch and then to Figma toward the end of the decade. UX was often added late, after the product was planned.
Now, 2025 and 2026
Nielsen Norman Group's State of UX 2026 says the market has stabilised since late 2024, but unevenly. Senior and generalist roles are recovering faster than entry-level ones, and aspiring UX people will still outnumber open roles. Teams are leaner and expect designers to cover more. Figma says India is its second-largest market by monthly users.
What AI changes (medium exposure)
AI tools can make screens, text and design options in seconds. Nielsen Norman Group warns that work which only assembles design-system parts is easy to automate. AI cannot replace talking to real users, finding the real problem or judging trust. Figma's own India research says 93% of designers report their companies use AI in design.
Three ways it could go by 2030
Steady path
This is a scenario, based on NN/g's view. It expects 2026 to stay competitive, with demand for breadth and judgement, not just screens. Do research, learn to design AI features that users can trust and control, and show your thinking in your portfolio.
If AI moves faster than expected
If AI agents do more tasks for users, fewer people may browse screens, and NN/g notes UI is already becoming less of a differentiator. Designers who understand behaviour, trust and business goals, and can design AI-led experiences, may stand out. Learn research and strategy, not only Figma.
If change is slower
If AI design tools stay unreliable, teams will still need designers for final decisions, but junior hiring may stay tight, as in 2025 and 2026. Build a strong portfolio, learn basic frontend code, and look at design roles in banks, e-commerce and other non-startup firms.
