- A four-year integrated teacher programme (ITEP) is now offered. NEP 2020 says it should become the minimum teaching degree by 2030.
- Coaching centres: under 2024 Ministry of Education guidelines, tutors need at least a graduation degree.
- Without a degree, you can start by teaching a skill, such as spoken English, music, art or coding, while you finish a degree. Online tutoring platforms set their own rules.
- Pay varies widely by city, school and subject. A real employer never charges a fee for a job.
How growth looked, and looks now
Earlier, about 2010 to 2019
From 2010 to 2019, most teaching jobs were in schools or coaching centres. Private tutoring happened at home or in small batches. Online learning and edtech firms started to grow later in the decade.
Now, 2025 and 2026
India has more than one crore school teachers in 2024-25 (UDISE+). On 1 September 2025, the Supreme Court ruled that in-service teachers with more than five years left must pass TET to continue. In May 2026 it refused to review this but moved the deadline to 31 August 2028. Edtech firms cut many jobs in 2022. Naukri shows education and training hiring up 44% in November 2025 from a year earlier.
What AI changes (medium exposure)
AI already makes worksheets, explains topics, marks simple answers and tutors one student at a time. It does not manage a classroom, notice a child who is struggling, or build trust. Teachers who use AI well can save time on preparation.
Three ways it could go by 2030
Steady path
Teaching remains a large field, and TET and degree rules matter more. The NEP 2020 target is a four-year integrated degree as the minimum for school teachers by 2030. Get the right qualification, pass TET or CTET, and learn to use online and AI tools.
If AI moves faster than expected
AI tutors take over simple doubt-solving and practice, and online tutoring with low fees gets squeezed. Teachers who coach, motivate, guide exams and handle live classrooms stay needed. Build a speciality, such as a hard subject or a skill course, and a local following.
If change is slower
Schools and coaching centres stay mostly in person, and exam rules stay strict. Demand for good teachers continues, especially outside big cities. Use the time to finish qualifications, improve subject depth and learn digital tools for blended classes.
