Software developer: skills, tools, growth and future in India
Software developers write, test and fix the code behind apps, websites and company systems. They work in teams and turn a business need into software that works.
Also searched as: software engineer, programmer, backend developer, full stack developer, SDE. Checked 16 October 2026.
What the work looks like
- Write code for new features, working from a task list agreed with the team.
- Read other people's code and find the cause of bugs.
- Write tests so that a new change does not break old features.
- Take part in daily team meetings and review each other's code before it goes live.
- Use AI coding tools for first drafts, then check the result line by line.
- Explain to non-technical colleagues what is possible and how long it will take.
Tools and technical skills
- One or two main languages, learnt well: Java, Python, JavaScript or TypeScript, C#
- SQL and databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL and MongoDB
- Git and GitHub for saving and sharing code
- Frameworks such as Spring Boot, Node.js, Django, FastAPI and .NET
- REST APIs and JSON, tested with Postman
- Data structures and algorithms, which most coding interviews ask about
- Docker and basic cloud (AWS or Azure) for running software
- AI coding assistants such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor or Claude
Skills beyond technology
- Communication: you must explain bugs and delays in simple words to managers and clients.
- Ownership: teams value people who finish what they start and say early when they are stuck.
- Learning speed: tools change every year, so people who learn fast stay useful.
- Careful checking: AI can write wrong code that looks right, so review is part of the job.
- Teamwork: most code is written and reviewed by groups, not alone.
How to get started in India
- B.Tech or BE in computer science or IT is the most common route into large IT firms.
- BCA, MCA, or B.Sc in computer science, maths or statistics is also accepted by many companies.
- Without a CS degree: learn one language well and build 2 or 3 working projects on GitHub. This can get you interviews at smaller firms and startups, but competition is high.
- Free learning: NPTEL and SWAYAM offer free online courses from IITs, including Python programming. You pay a small fee only if you want the proctored certificate exam. Check swayam.gov.in for current courses.
- First job: internship, campus hiring at IT services firms, or a junior role at a product company or startup. Never pay anyone for a job offer. Apply directly to the company or on trusted job boards.
How growth looked, and looks now
Earlier, about 2010 to 2019
From about 2010 to 2019, Indian IT services firms hired freshers in large batches from colleges and trained them on the job. Smartphones, online shopping and startups added product jobs in Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune. Cloud services and free frameworks made building software easier. A computer science degree was widely seen as a safe route into work.
Now, 2025 and 2026
Hiring is slower than business growth. Nasscom says India's tech revenue grew 6.1% in FY26, but jobs grew only 2.3%. In July 2025 TCS announced cuts of about 2% of staff, mostly mid and senior levels. Indeed data reported in June 2026 showed software development postings down 12.3% over three months. Naukri saw IT hiring for jobs paying under 20 lakh a year stay flat in February 2026. Pay varies widely by city, company and skill.
What AI changes (high exposure)
AI tools already write first drafts of code, tests and explanations. Stack Overflow's 2025 survey found 84% of developers use or plan to use AI tools, and about 47% use them daily. But 66% say AI answers are 'almost right, but not quite', and more developers distrust AI accuracy (46%) than trust it (33%). People still decide what to build and check the result.
Three ways it could go by 2030
Steady path
This is a scenario. WEF's 2025 report lists software and applications developers among the four fastest-growing jobs to 2030. Work moves toward design, testing and checking AI output. Learn one language deeply, build projects people can see, and add cloud basics.
If AI moves faster than expected
If AI agents handle most routine coding, hiring of juniors could shrink. WEF found 41% of employers expect to cut staff as AI's ability to do the work grows. In that case, move toward system design, security, testing, and deep knowledge of one field such as banking or health.
If change is slower
If AI tools stay 'almost right' and need heavy checking, as 66% of developers say today, demand for people who build and fix systems may stay steady. Slow IT hiring may continue. Keep skills current and look at product companies and global capability centres, which are offices of foreign firms in India.
