How growth looked, and looks now
Earlier, about 2010 to 2019
Around 2010 to 2019, most paralegal work was on paper: files, photocopies and printed cause lists. Research meant law reports and early online databases. The eCourts project, launched in 2007, slowly put case status online. Juniors usually learned by assisting a senior advocate or a law firm team.
Now, 2025 and 2026
Courts and law offices are going digital. eCourts Phase III began in 2023 with Rs 7,210 crore, including funds for AI and other new technology, says PIB. The Supreme Court uses AI to translate judgments and transcribe hearings, with human review. Naukri counted 19 percent fewer legal postings in April 2026 than April 2025.
What AI changes (medium exposure)
Research, first drafts and contract review are where AI tools help most, and they can invent citations or miss a clause. PIB says Indian courts use AI for translation and transcription but keep human validation. Checking, judgement, client contact and court work remain with people.
Three ways it could go by 2030
Steady path
This is a forecast, not a promise. Research, first drafts and document review are shared with AI tools while courts keep going digital. Juniors type less and check more. Learn to verify citations and clauses, learn e-filing, and build a speciality such as corporate, labour or IP work.
If AI moves faster than expected
Firms may need fewer junior researchers and reviewers. WEF already places legal secretaries just outside its top ten declining roles. Move toward client contact, negotiation support, court appearance (after enrolment and AIBE) and local-knowledge work. Never file AI output without checking every citation.
If change is slower
Courts and many Indian law offices may stay paper-heavy for years, so juniors keep doing manual filing and follow-up. Learn digital tools now anyway, because eCourts Phase III is funded to keep moving and clients will ask for faster, tracked work.
