Data analyst: skills, tools, growth and future in India

Data analysts collect numbers from sales, customers or operations, clean them, and show what they mean in tables and charts. Managers use this to make decisions.

Also searched as: business data analyst, MIS analyst, reporting analyst, BI analyst, analytics executive. Checked 16 October 2026.

What the work looks like

  • Pull data from databases with SQL and from Excel or CSV files.
  • Clean data: fix errors, remove repeats and fill gaps.
  • Build dashboards in Power BI or Tableau that managers check every day.
  • Answer questions such as 'Why did sales fall in Jaipur last month?'
  • Write short reports that explain findings in plain words.
  • Use AI tools to draft queries and charts, then check the numbers.

Tools and technical skills

  • SQL, the language for asking databases questions
  • Excel or Google Sheets: pivot tables, lookups, Power Query
  • Power BI or Tableau for dashboards; Looker Studio for free reports
  • Python with pandas and Matplotlib for bigger or messier data
  • Basic statistics: average, median, spread, correlation, A/B tests
  • Google Analytics 4 for website and marketing data
  • Git basics and clear documentation

Skills beyond technology

  • Asking the right question: a correct answer to the wrong question is useless.
  • Data storytelling: managers act on a clear chart and a short message, not a giant table.
  • Client and stakeholder handling: you must understand what the business really needs.
  • Attention to detail: one wrong filter can send a company in the wrong direction.
  • Curiosity: good analysts keep asking why.

How to get started in India

  • Many graduate degrees work, especially B.Com, BBA, B.Sc, B.Tech, economics or statistics.
  • Learn Excel, SQL and one dashboard tool (Power BI or Tableau). Many free courses exist.
  • Build 3 projects using public data, for example open government data at data.gov.in, and share them on GitHub or a simple web page.
  • IIT Madras runs an online BS in Data Science and Applications. Anyone who has passed Class 12 can apply through its qualifier test, without JEE.
  • First job: junior data analyst, MIS executive or reporting analyst in finance, retail, e-commerce or IT firms. If you already work in sales, finance or operations, start analysing your own team's data. Never pay anyone for a job offer. Apply directly to the company or on trusted job boards.

How growth looked, and looks now

Earlier, about 2010 to 2019

From about 2010 to 2019, much analyst work in India was done in Excel by MIS teams in banks, telecom and BPO firms. 'Big data' and 'data scientist' became popular words around the middle of the decade. Tools such as Tableau, and later Power BI, made dashboards easier to build. Many analysts moved on to data science roles.

Now, 2025 and 2026

The signs are mixed. LinkedIn named data and analytics one of five fast-growing skill stacks in India for 2026. But Indeed data reported in June 2026 also showed data and analytics postings down 6.7%. Employers want analysts who can also use AI tools and explain results. Pay varies widely by city, company and skill.

What AI changes (high exposure)

AI tools can already write SQL, build charts and summarise a table, so routine reporting is faster. But AI can pick the wrong column or invent a reason, and it does not know your company's rules. Stack Overflow found 66% of developers call AI answers 'almost right, but not quite'. The same risk applies to data work.

Three ways it could go by 2030

Steady path

This is a scenario. WEF's 2025 report lists big data specialists among the three fastest-growing jobs to 2030. Analysts who add Python, knowledge of one field such as finance or retail, and clear writing may stay useful. Keep SQL and one dashboard tool sharp.

If AI moves faster than expected

If AI tools answer data questions in plain English, simple reporting jobs could shrink. Value would move to choosing the right question, checking AI answers and fixing messy data. Learn one industry deeply, plus basic machine learning and how to test whether a result is real.

If change is slower

If AI tools stay unreliable on company data, analysts keep building dashboards by hand and demand may stay near today's level, uneven as in 2026. Make SQL and Excel strong, show real projects, and take any chance to work with real company data.
